High Stories: “I Got High and Joined a Zoom Meeting That Wasn’t Mine”

Woman in orange shirt, holding a cigarette, looks surprised at a laptop. Background has a dimly lit room with a red lamp.

It was a random Wednesday. I had the day off, I had snacks, and I had a gummy. A strong gummy.

The plan? Smoke a little, organize my desktop, maybe finally unsubscribe from that weird newsletter I somehow signed up for in 2016. Productive. Chill. Blissfully low-stakes.

But then I saw a Zoom link in my inbox. Subject line: "Quick Sync – 2PM."

Now, I freelance. I get a lot of random meeting invites. Was this with a client? A collab call I forgot about? A podcast check-in? My brain, marinating in 20mg of THC, could not confirm.

But instead of using logic or doing something smart like… I don’t know, checking my calendar, I just said:

“YOLO. Let’s join.”

I click. The camera turns on. I wave.

Dead silence.

On the screen: a panel of five people in suits. One guy is mid-presentation. Everyone is staring at me like I just broke into their living room and sat on the couch.

I immediately realize: I do not know these people. At all. This was not a work call. This was corporate.I had just high-crashed someone’s quarterly sales meeting. |

My brain short-circuited. I panicked and said the only thing that came to mind:

“Hey, sorry, wrong link—love the energy in here though!”

And then I peaced out with the speed of someone running from their own decisions.

Sat on the couch after, hoodie pulled over my face like it could erase time.
